World Health Organization (WHO) highlights condition of ‘hit’ West Africa virus Marburg and Ebola in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. This raises concerns about the local health system, in the face of so many dangerous outbreaks.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti expressed his concern. “We are very concerned about West Africa,” Moeti said.
“Fighting multiple outbreaks is a complex challenge,” he added.
Ebola
Health workers began vaccinating people exposed to Ebola in the capital Abidjan on Monday. The case of the deadly virus was again confirmed last weekend.
The local government uncovers the case Ebola it came from an 18 year old girl who had just traveled from Guinea.
Virus Marburg
Last week, Guinean health authorities also confirmed the Marburg virus, similar to Ebola.
“Africa faces more outbreaks of infectious diseases every year than any other region,” Moeti said.
The health system in West Africa is said to be weaker than the rest of the region. Even so, the WHO did not provide specific figures regarding the number of health workers or beds for patients across the West African region.
Meanwhile, WHO data shows West Africa in the past month recorded the highest number of COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began, and COVID-19 cases soared in the Ivory Coast, Guinea and Nigeria.
H5N1 bird flu
Separately, the Ivory Coast has identified an outbreak bird flu H5N1 near the commercial capital Abidjan. The local government immediately took steps to curb the spread of the outbreak.
“Facing three outbreaks at once, for any health system, this is a very difficult situation,” Mamadou Samba, Ivory Coast’s Director General of Health, told a news conference.
