Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis condemns the violence. “Blind anger leads nowhere. The life of a young policeman has been endangered. Now everyone must hold back and stay calm. This violence must end.” Sixteen suspected rioters have been arrested.
Criticism after video
The demonstration in Nea Smyrni was triggered by an incident last Sunday, correspondent Conny Keessen explains. “People sat in the central square enjoying the sun and were checked by the police whether they were complying with the corona measures. Discussions arose, more people got involved and then – apparently out of nowhere – police officers started working on a of the bystanders. “
The incident was filmed and posted on social media, which was followed by a storm of criticism. Opposition parties condemned the violence and the leader of the police union was also unhappy about it. “There are rules you have to obey,” he said. The incident is being investigated internally by the police and the Public Prosecution Service has also started an investigation.
