The decibels are rising for the presidential election. Candidates who do not submit any documents are out of the process
Everything points to a three-way battle for the presidency of SYRIZA. After the denial of Nikos Pappas that he will run for office, Stefanos Kasselakis, Pavlos Polakis and Sokratis Famellos have already started – either officially or unofficially – their pre-election campaign.
Apostolos Gletsos may have expressed interest, but at the moment there is no information on whether he has managed to collect the 30 signatures needed, while it remains to be seen if the rumors of another, female, nomination are true. Of course, everyone’s thoughts go to Rena Dourou, but she herself keeps her cards closed.
“I’m here”
Steph. Kasselakis, with his post at the beginning of the week, confirmed the information that said that he neither intends to found a new party nor to retire from politics, but will run for the presidency again. As Documento is able to know, it has also started collecting signatures from members of the Central Committee.
Announcements of support from organizations throughout Greece are leaking from his associates, showing that there is an open channel of communication with part of the base. He has started some tours, while it seems that for now he has abandoned the strategy of overpromotion through social media and it remains to be seen how he will make the official announcement. One thought is to hold an open rally so that it has the character of a political event.
“Race of Seats”
Last Thursday Paul. Polakis submitted his candidacy, together with 32 signatures and a copy of his letter of intent, to the secretary of the KE Rania Svigou. The Cretan MP since the day he openly challenged Steph. Kasselakis in the Political Secretariat has not taken a step back and is already working on his campaign. In fact, today he is organizing his first event in Chania.
“Let’s move forward in a struggle of confrontation of positions and programs, because the country needs a strong official opposition that will present a workable, radical, socially necessary and popularly understood government program as an alternative to the Mitsotakis government, which is closing its circle” he says among other things and adds: “The world is looking for a visible, alternative, progressive way out. And we must give our best to this, and not to disagreements over minor matters.”
“Proud Again”
“As long as SYRIZA is not doing well, society has no support for all its daily problems. If SYRIZA is not sufficient, then Mitsotakis is having a party. And who isn’t doing well? The citizen. SYRIZA has not been able to meet society’s demands lately,” Sokr said. Familiar, putting on the table the issue of progressive collaborations. “I understand those we disappointed and I invite you to come back, to rebuild our house. A new SYRIZA. A real Progressive Alliance” he said in his candidacy statement, clarifying, however, that this is not an invitation to New Left MPs.
“Let’s make our party proud again,” he says at another point, leaving clear pointers for Steph. Kasselakis, for whom he even emphasized that under his leadership SYRIZA was shrinking.
The Political Secretariat last week proposed as the only criterion for the presidential candidacy the collection of 30 signatures from members of the Central Committee.
Last Saturday at the Central Committee, Christos Spirtzis set one more condition for voting: the filing of the whereabouts of the presidential candidate, so that the delegates who will approve the nominations at the conference in early November will know the financial status of each candidate.
The motion passed, angering Steph’s supporters. Kasselakis, who interpreted the decision as an attempt to put obstacles in the candidacy of the former president.
The petition will not be vetted by a special committee, but its publication will be a prerequisite for a candidate to be nominated.
“If someone does not submit all the necessary documents by October 24, then their nomination will not reach the congress for approval,” a top Koumundourou official tells Documento, responding to rumors that delegates could approve someone’s candidacy without having submit where you are from.
On alert
During the week, the Political Secretariat will meet again and on Saturday, October 5, the Central Committee, so that the pre-conference dialogue can begin immediately after. It remains to be seen whether the polls for a new Central Committee will finally be held on November 24 (along with the presidential election) or at a later date, as many are calling for.
Call for collaborations
At Thursday’s Political Secretariat it was decided that SYRIZA’s parliamentary action should not be left behind due to internal party procedures.
Nikos Pappas tabled in the Parliament an amendment for the protection of borrowers, he spoke about the issues of farmers, about bank supplies and tabled proposals for establishing a maximum profit margin in refining, production and trading of energy, production and trading of food and industrial goods and for reduction of VAT, zeroing it in basic items.
The president of SYRIZA’s KO called on the progressive forces and the “dissatisfied conservatives” (turning a blind eye to the ND eleven) to support these proposals. He also repeated what he had said to the TIF in support of a progressive new president of the Republic.
The matter was published in the paper of Sunday 29/9
