On August 29th, shortly before midnight, the Graz fire brigade was called to a gas leak in an apartment in the 4th district. When the fire brigade arrived, the two residents could not give a cause, only that they had heard a hissing noise and were now suffering from shortness of breath. After receiving first aid from the fire brigade, the two people were handed over to the emergency services, who took them to a hospital for medical treatment.
While searching for the cause of the gas leak, a fire brigade team searched the apartment wearing heavy breathing apparatus and found an e-scooter whose batteries had begun to decompose. This decomposition process led to the battery heating up and the emission of white, flammable and toxic gases.
During this investigation, three cats were found unharmed and temporarily removed from the apartment.
The e-scooter was subsequently taken outside and cooled in a water basin; the apartment was ventilated with a high-pressure fan from the fire department.
