Battery explosion in some Sony wireless earphones ‘WF-1000XM4’ – KBench

There have been reports of random battery explosions in some Sony flagship wireless earphones, WF-1000XM4.

Reddit user u/akwok said, “I took my earbuds off during a work meeting at my desk, and after a few minutes I was startled by a loud noise and smell of chemicals. When I looked at the earbuds, one of the earbuds was fully open and the internal battery coil was disconnected. It was in the same condition,” along with a photo of the earbuds being split in half.

Fortunately, the earbuds were not worn at the time of the explosion, so there was no damage, but if they continued to wear the earbuds, they would have suffered hearing loss.

The earbuds were purchased in July 2021, and the battery is an original battery shipped from the factory, and it is said that the battery was overused normally. In this regard, the workman blog, an overseas blog, said, “The exact cause has not yet been identified, but it is suspected that the Zenipower battery is defective.”

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that the WF-1000XM4 battery exploded. At the end of last month, news that a WF-1000XM4 earbud being used by a Reddit user (u/yangcong1982) exploded in the charging case was reported through foreign media.
