‘Batman’ continued this weekend at the top of the North American box office, as it began to gain traction overseas, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.
According to provisional data from the specialized firm, the new version of ‘Batman’ grossed some 36.8 million dollars between Friday and Sunday in theaters in the United States and Canada.
The dark and gritty superhero movie from Warner Bros. starring Robert Pattinsonthus surpassed the $300 million mark in North America in just three weeks of theatrical release and almost doubled that figure abroad, with $598 million.
In second place in the ranking was another dark film, the fantasy animation “Jujutsu Kaisen 0”from Crunchyroll/Funimation (95% owned by Sony Pictures), which tells the story of a young student who becomes a sorcerer and battles a cursed spirit.
This feature film grossed $17.7 million in North American theaters, which David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research called “an excellent opening” for an anime.
Third place went to “Uncharted: Off the Map”, also from Sony, with 8 million dollars raised. In this film Tom Holland plays a treasure hunter in the style of Indiana Jones.
In fourth place was another release, by independent studio A24, titled simply “X,” with $4.4 million.
According to Gross, this horror production, which has enjoyed good reviews, should “should quickly recover its costs and make a few million dollars.”
It was followed, in fifth place, by the comedy “Dog”, from Metro Goldwyn, with Channing Tatum in the lead role, which grossed $4.1 million over the weekend.
