Sitting in jewelry or fully made up in your bathrobe? ‘Bathleisure’ is the name of the trend, which stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Salma Hayek and Hailey Bieber are crazy about. Not only does it look nice on social media, it is also beneficial for your (mental) health.
Social media is full of photos of celebrities and influencers in bathrobes. This is how the ‘bathleisure’ trend was born. A contraction of the English words ‘bath’ and ‘leisure’, which in Dutch means ‘bath’ and ‘leisure’.
One of the most popular ways to make it your own: the Italian version that La Dolce Vita radiates. Then you not only wear a thick, soft bathrobe, but you combine it with make-up, striking gold earrings and dramatic black sunglasses.

The whole aesthetic first made its debut in 2017, when singer Rita Ora wore a bathrobe on the red carpet and Rihanna was on the cover of Vogue with a bath towel wrapped around her head. Since then, countless people have copied this look.

In 2024, the term ‘bathleisure’ is back. Just think of Balenciaga: a few weeks ago the luxury brand shocked by selling a luxurious towel skirt for 695 euros. And last year bathrobes were again an item on the catwalks. In short, nowadays swimwear is an aesthetic that looks beautiful in photos and on social media. Although according to some it is much more: it would also be a wellness trend.

Bathleisure in 2024? A tête-à-tête with yourself
“’Bathleisure’ is now synonymous with well-being and self-care,” Jamie Genevieve, owner of skin care line Vieve, tells British magazine Glamor. So it’s not just a matter of making a spectacle of your laziness or faking a pampering evening for Instagram. It’s also something you can use to make yourself feel better, she says.
According to Genevieve, new parents and employees who are often under stress would especially benefit from such an upgraded bath ritual. “Just 15 minutes for yourself is enough. You do it in the morning before the whole house is awake or after work – with or without a glass of red wine.”

Taking a bath is extremely good for your health. A 2016 University of Oregon study showed that taking regular hot baths not only relieves sore muscles, but can also lower blood pressure. It is therefore no wonder that water wellness and ‘bathleisure’ are (again) gaining in popularity.
Plus, when you lie in a warm bath, your body temperature naturally rises. This drops when you get out, which stimulates the release of the sleep hormone melatonin and therefore helps you sleep better and deeper, according to experts. Ideally, you should do ‘bathleisure’ about one to two hours before going to sleep.
In practice, this trend only requires a bath and some time for yourself. Whether you choose to wear your most beautiful jewelry, fluffiest bathrobe and softest towel from the closet is entirely up to you. Stars prove that it can still be used for a beautiful selfie on social media.
