Bathing with contact lenses has 7 times the risk of causing blindness

Suara.com – People who use contact lenses when taking a bath is more at risk of experiencing blindness. Research by experts at the University of Southampton, England, proves this.

The study found that people who wore contact lenses while showering were seven times more likely to develop vision-threatening infections. Because bathing with contact lenses every day is the most significant risk factor for microbial keratitis associated with contact lenses (CLMK).

Contact lens users between the ages of 25 and 54 are most likely to experience the infection. According to the study, less than half of the patients studied had some form of vision loss due to infection.

This scientific study is reported in the Daily Telegraph and published in the journal BMJ Open Ophthalmology. Research related to hygiene habits was carried out on 78 contact lens wearers, 37 of whom had CLMK and 41 others did not.

The study is said to have found that bathing with contact lenses tripled the risk of CLMK. However, if done every day, the risk factor is said to be seven times.

A threefold increase also occurred in people who slept with their contact lenses still in place.

Researchers say that just under 50 percent of patients experience some type of vision loss due to infection, 70 percent of whom admit the condition is having an impact on their lives.

Parwez Hossain, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southampton and head of the study, said the condition causes permanent vision problems.

“Contact lenses offer many benefits, but microbial keratitis associated with contact lenses is often the cause of permanent vision problems and some cases may even require a corneal transplant or cause eye loss,” said Parwez quoted from the Mirror.

According to him, 66 percent of poor contact lens hygiene is the main cause of infection. Unfortunately, 90 percent of the correspondents did not know the risks associated with hygiene, even if they bought contact lenses from an optometrist.

Microbial keratitis is an infection that affects the cornea, the transparent layer at the front of the eye. Corneal infections are usually associated with contact lens wear.

Symptoms include eye pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. Risk factors for these conditions include not washing hands, sleeping with contact lenses attached, and bathing or swimming while wearing contact lenses.
