The maximum number of clubs in a golf bag is fourteen. All amateur and professional players know this. Unfortunately, Joel Dahmen also remembered it late in Las Vegas when he saw one more. A distraction that risks costing him dearly: the American was not on the driving range but competing on the PGA Tour.
As soon as he realized this, Joel called the marshall, reported the mistake and handed over the excess iron. But by now the omelette had been made. A double omelette given its not exactly exciting season.
Allo Shriners Children’s Open the American was desperately looking for points to move up from 124th place in the FedEx Cup and keep the full card for the Stars and Stripes tour in 2025. The full right goes to the top 125 of that ranking.
Granted that in this phase every race is the one “of life”, Shriners Children’s Open included. It’s a shame that (perhaps) too much concentration on the score distracted Joel Dahmen who played the first four holes with fifteen tools of the trade. And there’s no excuse for the number of clubs in a golf bag. Rule 41.b provides two penalty strokes for each hole played with 15 clubs for a maximum of four extra strokes per round.
And so it was: his final score of 72 became a 76, with little chance of making the cut.
“It had never happened to me before,” said Dahmen after recalling that he always carries 15 or 16 clubs on the practice field or in the course test. “It all depends on how many irons I’m testing. It’s a common practice in the pro world – he said -. I played Tuesday and Wednesday here with 15 clubs,” he added. “We didn’t see in the match that I had two 4 irons in my bag.”
Dahmen said he noticed the intruder at the tee of the fourth hole, noticing a 4-iron crammed into an unusual spot in the pocket. As soon as he realized the mistake, he immediately notified a marshall and removed that 4 iron.
“What can I do? I can only get angry with everything and everything – said Dahmen -. At the same time, I just had to keep playing golf. But I didn’t do a great job afterwards.”
