In the mail next Friday facebook Phil Lesh’s profile reads: “Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, passed away peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by family and full of love. Phil brought great joy to everyone around him and leaves a legacy of music and love. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this time.’
Phil Lesh was born on March 15, 1940 in California. In 1965, he began working with Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron McKernan and Bill Kreutzmann and together they formed the band Grateful Dead.
She became known for combining several styles in her work, from rock to blues and world music to gospel. Many considered this to be the most representative musical act of the hippie youth. According to some, she created the subgenre known as jam rock.
Phil Lesh played bass until the group in 1995. In 2020, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked him eleventh on the list of the best bass players of all time. After breaking up the Grateful Dead, he played with other musicians under the name Phil Lesh And Friends.
He has been struggling with health problems in recent years. He underwent a liver transplant and suffered from prostate and bladder cancer. Nevertheless, he was on the stage until the last days. This March, he celebrated his birthday with a spectacular concert at the Capitol Theater in New York.
