Bass-Baritone Ryan Speedo Green awarded prestigious Beverly Sills Artist Award by New York Metropolitan Opera

New York/Berlin (MH) – Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green receives this year’s Beverly Sills Artist Award from the New York Metropolitan Opera (Met). The $50,000 award recognizes exceptionally gifted singers with burgeoning careers, the house said Wednesday. The 37-year-old has been a fixture on the Met stage since his debut in 2012 as Mandarin in Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot.”

Green landed his first leading role at the Metropolitan Opera early last week, starring in the young Emile Griffiths in Terence Blanchard’s Champion. Opening the 2021/22 season, he performed Uncle Paul in “Fire Shut Up in My Bones” by the same composer. Other role debuts include Varlaam in Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and Truffaldin in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos.

In 2021, the bass-baritone received the Beverly Sills Artist Award for the first time. In response to the corona pandemic and the effects on singers – the season had to be canceled at the Met – the award went to a total of five artists, in addition to Green to the sopranos Erin Morley and Brenda Rae, the countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and the tenor Ben Bliss.

The award was established in 2006 through an endowment gift from the late Agnes Varis, a former board member of the Metropolitan Opera, to commemorate legendary American soprano Beverly Sills. Previous winners include mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato (2007), tenor Bryan Hymel (2013), soprano Nadine Sierra (2018) and last year baritone Will Liverman.
