Basque Country and Béarn to Host Olympic Flame for Paris 2024 Olympics

The Basque Country and Béarn will have the honor of hosting the Olympic flame as part of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Five Basque municipalities and three Béarnaises will witness the Olympic flame on May 20, 2024, with over 11,000 participants having the privilege of carrying the flame.

Jean Jacques Lasserre, President of the County Council, expressed his excitement about the Olympic flame passing through the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. The course for the flame was unveiled on June 23, 2023.

The journey of the Olympic flame will begin in Olympia, Greece, on April 16, 2024, following ancient tradition. After a 12-day stay in Greece and a crossing of the Mediterranean aboard the famous three-master, the Belem, the flame will officially arrive in France on May 8, 2024.

The arrival of the Olympic Flame in France will mark the start of a continuous celebration across the country for over two months, leading up to the Games. On May 20, 2024, the flame will cross the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, passing through eight cities including Biarritz, Anglet, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Bayonne, Hasparren, Orthez, Arette, and Pau.

The mayors of Biarritz and Anglet, Maider Arosteguy and Claude Olive, expressed their delight in welcoming the Olympic flame. The two cities have collaborated to unveil the planned route. The flame will arrive at the Côte des Basques, pass through the city center of Biarritz, the Grande Plage, and ascend to the Lighthouse before entering Anglet via the Boulevard de la Mer. It will continue through the Promenades du Grand large and des Falaises, concluding its route at the Chambre d’Amour, Promenoir Victor Mendiboure on Anglet Surf Avenue. Numerous activities will accompany the journey of the Olympic flame.

A total of 66 stopover cities, including Pau, have been selected before the flame’s arrival in Paris on July 26, 2023.
