It is well known in the industry and many in the region know it too well, BBZ Opladen stood
especially in the past 4 years for the development of German players.
The Leverkusen team took third place twice in a row in the 2nd Toyota
DBBL. With the rise, many have now wondered if this philosophy continued
would be or now a completely new team would be put together.
The truth lies in the middle: It is clear that the aim of the project is Rhineland, young
to further develop German players and on the quite individual path
support in the best possible way. But it is also clear that a player is all the better
can develop if, in addition to playing time, training and support, she also has fellow players who
has the quality corresponding to the league. Training with and against better ones

That’s why the Baskets Rheinland were not idle and looked for players
around, who want to help shape this path. When recruiting, it was important that not only
playing quality means a win, but that the new players too
would fit into the team as human beings. The first new player is the newly minted one
College graduate with a Bachelor of Human Behavior from McMaster University,
about 30 minutes south of Toronto. Canada, Greater Toronto Area? That rings a bell for many
longtime BBZ supporters, there have been several Canadians over the past decade
who found their way to Leverkusen. And so we’re very happy that Sarah Gates is taking the
Baskets Rheinland will join. The 24-year-old guard player comes along
impressive stats across the Atlantic and was a USport in her senior year of college
Athlete often awarded the year.
Sarah herself is looking forward to her first professional position: “Every team I’ve played has felt as a
second home. When I had met the coaches it felt very inviting and comfortable. I’m looking
foward to playing, learning new stils of play and supporting my teammates. This season will
be great.”
We will certainly see Sarah often in the halls in Leverkusen, because she wants to too
