The recommendation to eat healthy and balanced is of course valid for everyone. But perhaps even more so for pregnant women as nutrition is crucial for the health of the mother and her future baby. Following the example of Strasbourg, which launched its “green ordinance” system at the end of 2022, the city of Rennes has been distributing free baskets of organic and local fruits and vegetables to expectant mothers since this fall.
An action of “prevention and health promotion” aimed at pregnant women but also a measure of “support for purchasing power and organic and local agriculture”, according to Yannick Nadesan, deputy delegate for health at the city of Rennes.
Three, six or nine months depending on the family quotient
Tested for a year, the system currently only concerns pregnant women living in the northern districts of the city and who will have to register to benefit from it. Depending on their family quotient, they will be offered a free basket every two weeks for three, six or nine months. “We plan to reach around a hundred women in the first year but we hope to increase our strength in the future and extend the system to other neighborhoods,” underlines the elected communist.
Distributions are carried out in two social and solidarity economy structures, ESS Cargo located on the Rennes-2 campus in Villejean and La Cohue in the Maurepas district.
