With considerable difficulty, Panathinaikos sealed the home advantage ahead of the Basket League playoffs. In a postponed match for the first matchday of the third round, the “greens” defeated Prometheus 90-82 (50-36 halftime) and were applauded by 10,000 fans at OAKA.
Prometheus managed to come back from -20 in the second period (44-24) and came within shooting distance (70-68), but two three-pointers by Dimitris Moraitis helped Panathinaikos to protect the gains.
Matias Lessor scored 15 points for Panathinaikos. Ioannis Papapetrou added 13, while Grant (12), Moraitis (11), Grigonis (10), Kalaitzakis (9), Nan (6), Mitoglou (6) also distinguished themselves.
Injured Kostas Slukas and Juancho Hernangomet, who are racing to catch the Euroleague semi-final with Fenerbahce on May 24 in Berlin, are absent.
Etsenike (19), Reynolds (17), Cowan (11), Hale (9) stood out from the Patras team, which lost its coach Vassilis Papatheodorou in the first half (he was sent off with two technical penalties). Dimitris Menoudakos took over the reins in the second half of the match.
The second phase of the championship ends on Monday with games without ranking, while the quarterfinals are expected to start two days later, with the pairings of Panathinaikos-PAOK, Olympiakos-AEK, Peristeriou-Kolossos and Promethea-Aris.
