BASKETBALL: JDA Dijon cracks against Strasbourg in extra time

Having led a very large part of the match without dominating outrageously, the Dijon team had to face a well-armed and insolent Strasbourg team at long distance this Tuesday at the end of the day at the Palais des Sports in Dijon, but also more lucid in overtime (81-87).

The SIG, 4th in the championship standings (17v-7d before the match), came to the Dijon Sports Palace on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 with triggers and long-distance ammunition. The most dangerous of them was called Jaromir Bohacik. But it is another who killed the JDA Dijon: Bonzie Colson.

In the first quarter, the Strasbourg player scored 13 of his team’s 20 points. This before resurfacing in the fourth quarter as well as in overtime.

JDA Dijon leads the score

In the meantime, without ever taking shelter, JDA Dijon led a large part of the match. If the Strasbourg defense was vigilant on the famous Dijon “pick and roll”, Axel Julien, Jaron Jonhson and Hans Vanwijn allowed the Dijon team to go to the locker room with an advantage of +5 (37-32). Laurent Legname’s team could also rely on the distribution operated by David Holston and a decent defense.

The SIG was not very far each time but we felt a JDA Dijon remaining in its match to go for a 6th consecutive victory in the league. It was obviously too early to really tell at half-time but the signals were positive. It was even Bonnie Colson who was somewhat losing her nerves against Hans Vanwijn while the Belgian player insisted on a good position at the low post.

Hans Vanwijn was not destabilized on the contrary and returned from the locker room scoring 13 of the 16 points for JDA Dijon in the third quarter. The score was increased to 53-46 at the end of these ten minutes of play.

DeAndre Lansdowne sends everyone into overtime

In a match in which the Dijon team failed to have more than an 11-point difference, the fourth quarter would end with the Strasbourg equalizer. However, Axel Julien and David Holston’s taste for “money time” gave reasons to foresee another victory. Like the three-point shot from David Holston followed by a defensive streak forcing the opponents to return the ball after 24 seconds of possession (70-65). Or the exploitation of transitions by Axel Julien at full speed to cause faults and return his free throws (74-71).

The Dijon captain also forced Jaromir Bohacik to commit his fifth personal fault, synonymous with final exit from the field. The Czech player still had time to put 7 out of 8 long-distance shots in this match. And it is thanks to these three-point shots that the SIG did not let go, until the end, until this attempt, “from elsewhere”, to the buzzer of DeAndre Lansdowne, who snatched the extension.

During the five additional minutes of play, JDA Dijon was certainly not spared by the whistle blows and rather severe affirmed refereeing decisions, but it must also be said that lucidity was no longer there on the Dijon side. With in particular transitions developed too hastily and symbolized by losses of ball too fast.
The start of this extension was also fatal for the Dijon team (74-81 to 2’55 from the end of the match, or 7-0 from the SIG). Bonnie Colson meanwhile did not come out of her match and sank the JDA Dijon in the end.

Bonzie Colson, sickening MVP for JDA Dijon

The refereeing trio was loudly whistled. Coach Laurent Legname and his staff, as well as the players, pouted. The SIG had just won with a long-distance insolence (nearly 50% success and shots which “rained” in the basket) and three players with more than 15 points scored, including two with more than 20 points. The MVP of the match is none other than Bonzie Colson who lined up 30 points to 11/17 on shots and 5 rebounds.

This 6th season in 29 Jeep Elite games (23v-6d) for the JDA Dijon mainly stopped a series of victories and saw the chasing teams in the standings return to the fight for the top 2.
Victorious at Bourg-en-Bresse, AS Monaco is giving itself a bit of air in the lead.
