Before the game started, Kamar Baldwin was bid farewell. When the BG players came in, the top scorer from Göttingen, his left arm in a sling, high-fived his team-mates. He will no longer play after his serious injury from the Würzburg game. When he said goodbye, he received a standing ovation. “MVP! MVP!” chanted the Violet fans, short for Most Valuable Player. Baldwin wished the team success and thanked the fans: “It was great!”

Then the time came. The violets had the first attack. Jeremiah Martin gave the home side the lead, but the guests were able to equalize. Hamburg then lacked marksmanship. Harper Kamp and twice Jeff Roberson put the Göttingen team ahead 9:2, Harald Frey increased it to 12:2 with another three pointer. The hall trembled for the first time. The Hamburg coach took a first break. That worked. The guests fought their way up to two points (14:12). The first quarter ended with 22:16.

Hamburg’s Maik Kotsar scored the first two points in the second half, while Göttingen’s Mathis Mönninghoff held back. However, the violets could not continue that, the guests came up to one point (26:25). Roberson’s five points in a row created some breathing space again, but no rest. Hamburg stayed tuned (34:32). This is how it went on: The hosts presented, the guests couldn’t be shaken off and even managed to equalize. At 43:43 the teams went into the dressing rooms.

After the break, Göttingen initially had the momentum on his side again. Frey made three points with the first attack after the break. Kotsar was only able to convert one of his two free throws. Martin went to the basket and scored, Kamp increased to 50:44. As a result, the home side forced Hamburg to make mistakes, but did not benefit from them on their own offensive (53:48). The picture remained the same: Göttingen scored but could not break away. With a four point lead (64:60) we went into the last section.

“I’m incredibly proud of my team today,” said BG coach Roel Moors. “We reacted and played with a lot of energy.” He saw confident players. “The team always believed in itself.” Although it was often tight, his team controlled most of the game and deservedly won. “We have to take that with us into the next game.”
