Basketball: Bremerhaven polar bears now want to play in the Bundesliga basketball

The polar bears tackle it. Second division club Bremerhaven has applied for a license for the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). And that’s because of Corona.

Polar bear boss Nils Ruttmann explains: “The crisis has opened the door faster than expected.”

Background: After the relegation in 2019, the club gave itself three years to economic consolidation. Received the right of promotion in March after the ProA season had ended, but as second division. The BBL licensing hurdles (minimum budget: 3 million euros, equity capital: 250,000 euros) are high. But suspended because of Corona. The polar bears can therefore hope for approval. Ruttmann: “I hope that the league honors our consolidation course.”

In addition to Bremerhaven, the Chemnitz 99ers and the current 17 first division clubs have submitted their license documents for the coming season on time.

Whether and how things will continue for EWE Baskets Oldenburg (currently fifth) in this BBL season will be decided on April 30 at the latest, possibly already next week.

The idea is: If the season has been interrupted since mid-March, the games should only take place in a few locations. “You would then look for a place in the north, one in the middle and one in the south of Germany,” says BBL Managing Director Stefan Holz. However, all games would be ghost games.
