The start into the continuation of the season was a complete success, and at times it was inspiring: The WWU Baskets Münster stormed into the playoffs in the 2nd basketball Bundesliga Pro B with a 75:52 (46:25) victory over the second of Bayern Munich . The 23 point difference is a pound for the next move through the first round. Maundy Thursday continues against the well-known northern rival from Stahnsdorf.
Coach Philipp Kappenstein saw his plan well implemented. “We did very well defensively. It’s a great start for us and the first step into the second lap, ”he said. “All twelve men were fully there today. That’s how it has to be in the playoffs. ”
Marck Coffin opened by three
The Baskets didn’t take a second to show they were in playoff mode. Marck Coffin by Dreier and Cosmo Grühn put Münster on the scoreboard. And since the Kappenstein boys went to work defensively, focused and gripping, Munich had massive problems to score. Only Lukas Zerner sank an attempt in the Munster basket – from the free throw line to 1: 7 (4th).
The baskets were dominant, were “on fire” and continued to affect the FCB. Thomas Reuter sprinkled four points in a row to make it 17: 8 and then followed up with a successful throw from distance to make it 20:10. Crazy what was going on here. But it got even better: Coffin increased to 22:10 after winning the ball by dunking himself – that was all right. And the next effective hit came directly afterwards with the buzzer, when Coffin sank the ball from far behind the three-point line at 25:10. What a strong first quarter of the highly concentrated and gripping EMU baskets.
Strong phase from strong Thomas Reuter
It continued in the rhythm that Münster gave offensively and defensively. Reuter first with a threesome and then after a steal from Kai Hänig with a fast break to 30:10 – the Bayern youngsters looked battered because the baskets did not lose a cent and also did not let Erol Ersek’s six counters drive them crazy. Twice Stefan Weß and Helge Baues after a dream play by Jasper Günther screwed the lead to 38:16. A hammer, what the host conjured up on the field – and unimaginable what would have been going on here with fans in the hall. Münster preserved this lead until the break, when Malcolm Delpeche’s basket – the center had ten points in half-time – went 46:25.
Bumpy Baskets start in the second half
Take a deep breath, which the Bavarians in particular needed. And indeed, the guest from the south had the better start with the 6-0 run. Münster slacked off a bit, especially offensive actions were missing in the first minutes of the third quarter. But if things don’t go under the opponent’s basket, then you have to plow even more under your own – and Münster did that relentlessly. Now also acting with a zone defense, the Kappenstein troop allowed Bayern, who were not thrown to a high percentage (33 percent out of the field in the first 30 minutes), only a few free attempts and thus made this rather suboptimal part of the game almost balanced (11:13) .
The cushion worked out and played in the first half held even without offensive highlights, 3:45 minutes before the end it was still 19 points ahead of Oliver Pahnke’s basket (66:47). The game was decided, also with a view to a possible three-way comparison in the group, the 23 points are a real bargaining chip.
But why actually three-way comparison? With the defensive performance of these 40 minutes and the offensive appearance of the first half, the TKS 49ers and the BBC Coburg must first beat these Münsteraner.
Points WWU Baskets: Coffin (14/3), Reuter (14/2), J. König (10/2), Delpeche (10), Weß, Pahnke (6 each), Hänig (3), Günther, A. König (4 each), Grühn, Baues (2 each)
