Basically, the price of a key food has gone up. Czechs are storming the shops, buying the latest bits at better prices

Unpleasant surprises appear with an ever-increasing range of foods. After the rapid rise in the prices of butter and eggs, the price of other goods that people most often buy before Christmas to bake cookies has also soared. It’s nothing but sugar.

Rapid price increase

It’s amazing how the price of sugar has skyrocketed. Basically one hundred percent month to month. While in September sugar was sold at 18 kroner per kilogram, today it is at least 35 kroner.

So it’s no wonder that people are attacking those shops that are listing sugar and selling it at least at reasonable prices. This is probably the last chance to buy cheaper sugar. It should continue to increase in price, and even the events will no longer be so profitable.

According to the traders, the sugar suppliers who have raised their prices are behind the price increase. In September, they still sold sugar produced under last year’s conditions, but now this year’s sugar is already on sale. This was mainly reflected in an increase in energy costs. Sugar producer Tereos will pay a billion kronor for gas this year, up from just hundreds of millions last year. Emission allowances have also been reflected in costs.

Will there be enough sugar?

One reason is the lower sugar beet harvest. It wasn’t dramatically bad, but due to the spring drought, not good by any stretch of the imagination. There is therefore less raw material, which is reflected in the price. However, there should be no danger of running out of sugar. After all, the higher price also acts as a natural barrier to bigger purchases.

Sadly, the case of sugar also demonstrates that we will have to pay much more for food than we used to in the past. One product after another adapts to new conditions, and virtually no one can avoid them. The price level is simply rising, making absolutely everything more expensive.
