One year after the launch of the basic psychology service in the Salerno Local Health Authority, the numbers confirm the importance of this new resource: 13,936 services were carried out and 3,509 patients were able to access a first level of free psychological assistance. The data, presented during the conference “Pathological addictions in the field of local healthcare” organized in Salerno by the Order of Psychologists of Campania, underline the impact of a service that represents a novelty at a national level.
Currently, the Salerno Local Health Authority has 26 basic psychologists active in the various health districts, with further support from two professionals on the Fisciano university campus.
“The response from citizens was incredible,” said the president of the Order of Psychologists of Campania, Armando Cozzuto, underlining how the service responded to a need that had been neglected in the past. Cozzuto also highlighted how basic psychology contributes to the sustainability of the healthcare system, preventing inappropriate prescriptions of psychotropic drugs and unnecessary hospitalizations.
According to the data presented, the age group that most benefited from the service is between 15 and 30 years old, with 44% of requests, followed by the group between 31 and 60 years old (33%). In recent months, there has also been an increase among those under 14 (10%) and those over 60 (13%). “These numbers demonstrate that we have also managed to overcome some age-related stereotypes,” added Cozzuto.
