Bashar al-Assad has won the Syrian presidential election with 95% of the vote

The other two candidates, former government minister Abdulla Sallum and Mahmud Marai, the government’s fifth opposition, received 1.5% and 3.3% of the vote respectively.

The elections took place in areas controlled by the Syrian government. More than 18 million citizens have the right to vote in Syria and abroad, Interior Minister Mohammed al-Rahmun said.

With the support of Russia and Iran, Assad has regained control of more than 60% of the territory in the war-torn country. The rebels control areas in the north and northwest of the country, and the Kurds in the northeast.

The opposition rejected the election as a farce, and 55-year-old Assad was expected to win without difficulty.

Asad, an ophthalmologist, was first elected president in a referendum in 2000 after the death of his father, Hafez, who had ruled Syria for 30 years.

The last presidential election in Syria took place in 2014, when two other candidates ran in addition to Assad.

Assad received 88% of the vote in the previous election.
