Basement Discovery Leads to Bizarre Reburial

A fascinating archaeological discovery ⁢has been made during the expansion ⁤of ⁢the Pachuca-Huejutla highway in Hidalgo, ⁤Mexico. Construction workers ⁤unearthed the remnants ⁣of a pyramidal basement, believed to be part⁤ of ‍an ancient pre-Hispanic settlement.

The National Institute ‍of Anthropology and history (INAH) confirmed the discovery, stating that⁤ the structure is “the stratigraphic‌ profile of a pyramidal basement that, after exhaustive study, was reburied as a conservation measure.”

This intriguing find is thought to be⁢ connected to the Metzca manor, a settlement that thrived in the high Sierra of Hidalgo during the Epiclassic (650-950 AD) and Late Postclassic‌ (1350-1519 AD) periods.

The discovery, made in early June 2024, occurred during the construction‍ of a third lane on federal highway ⁢105.Despite ⁤its significance, the finding was not initially made public.

“The structure is part of a pre-Hispanic settlement known as San Miguel – given its proximity ⁣to the town of San miguel Metzquititlán – ⁣wich has been‍ cataloged and reported to ⁢the Directorate of the‍ Public‌ Registry of Monuments and Archaeological and ⁣Ancient Zones ‌of the INAH.”

Archaeologists have identified five distinct sectors and at least ten archaeological mounds ‌within this heritage site.

“In accordance ⁢with the national and international principles applicable to archaeological matters, exhaustive ‍documentation of ⁤the⁢ site and ‌monument was carried out, with the support of drones for the advancement of digital photogrammetric‍ models.”

To ensure the preservation of this important archaeological find, the INAH Archeology Council authorized the construction of a 43-meter-long rock masonry wall ⁣with cement ⁣joints. Before reburial, the pyramidal ‍basement was carefully protected with ⁤geotextile.
