  • In Basel, 5,000 yellow ribbons were put up in several districts on Friday.

  • They are intended to commemorate the approximately 100 Israelis who have been held hostage by Hamas since October 7, 2023.

  • The action is unauthorized and has also taken place in other cities.

Anyone who was in Basel on Thursday evening or Friday may have already seen them: yellow ribbons attached to the railings at the Rhine promenade, at Aeschenplatz and other locations. Next to them are photos of different people and the message “Never again is now”, which refers to the Holocaust. The yellow ribbons were also seen in Zurich and elsewhere on Friday.

The Basel action is supported by an interest group

The mounted wristbands are a civil memorial campaign. They commemorate the approximately 100 Israeli hostages who have been in the hands of Hamas since October 7, 2023. At the same time, they are intended to draw attention to how little is being done to free the prisoners.

According to the Jewish weekly magazine “Tachles”, the group behind the unauthorized action is the interest group for the release of the hostages, consisting of Jewish and non-Jewish people from Basel and Israel. Those responsible wish to remain anonymous.
