Bart De Wever: “We are forced into the Covid Safe Ticket” (Antwerp)

According to N-VA chairman Bart De Wever, the Flemish government was put on hold during the Consultation Committee. “In a pandemic where a state of emergency is declared, under the contingency plan and under the Pandemic Act, Flanders does not have much to contribute. It is constantly limiting damage,” he said in Terzake on Canvas. “We are forced into that Covid Safe Ticket and that is a ‘fausse bonne idée’.”

“The Flemish level had to do one thing and that was to vaccinate its population. We did that brilliantly, with 92 percent,” said De Wever. “If a region has 10 percent occupancy in intensive care and Wallonia has 15 percent and Brussels 25 percent. Where are you going to entwine? For the Vivaldi club, that is in Flanders.”

For De Wever, therefore, interventions should have been carried out mainly in the other two regions. “You would have to expect that if the best student steps up, the worst student should certainly do so. But nothing just never happens.”

He thinks the Corona Safe Ticket in the catering industry is a bad idea, because it creates a false sense of security. It would encourage people to throw all precautions overboard.

According to De Wever, the vaccination rate in Flanders cannot be increased significantly anymore. According to the N-VA mayor, two thirds of unvaccinated people are in intensive care in Antwerp. “And most of them are of non-European origin. These are the groups that are very difficult to reach with vaccination,” says De Wever. “These are not the people sitting next to you in the restaurant.”
