The national government recently announced its decision to decree dry law for the presidential election day of May 29. According to what was reported by the Ministry of the Interior, the measure will take effect at 4:00 pm on Saturday the 28th, and will last until 12:00 noon. May 30 (holiday Monday), the day after the elections.
However, the day before the elections coincides with the Champions League final between Liverpool, where the Colombian Luis Díaz plays, and Real Madrid. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. (Colombian time), so -in case of reaching extra time or definition by penalties- it could be extended beyond 4:00 p.m., the time it starts. The dry law.
For this reason, through a letter addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Daniel Palacios, the Association of Bars of Colombia (Asobares) submitted a request to modify the start time of the Dry Law, next Saturday, May 28.
“Given the announcement of the implementation of the Prohibition Law for the forthcoming election day, which establishes a start time for 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 28, We request that this time be changed to 6:00 pmsince hundreds of businesses, millions of viewers and thousands of workers from different activities will broadcast, live and work for the Champions League final match that will take place at 2:00 pm, local Colombian time, between two greats of the world football, Real Madrid and Liverpool, where the Colombian star, Luis Díaz, plays”, details the letter signed by the president of Asobares, Camilo Ospina Guzmán.
Finally, the letter notes that said match has the possibility of extension and definition by penalties, exceeding the time set by the Ministry of the Interior for the start of the Dry Law. “(…) it would make this event not live in the best way or have positive benefits for everyone. “For this reason, being aware of his excellent human and professional qualities, we request the reconsideration of said start time, for 6:00 pm,” the letter concludes.
Government ordered the closure of borders for the elections of May 29
The National Government, as a prelude to the presidential election, ordered the closure of borders as a measure of public order to guarantee the security of the day.
The Minister of the Interior, Daniel Palacios, pointed out that Decree 830 was issued, which stipulates the closure of land and river borders starting Saturday, May 28 at 6:00 p.m. through Monday, May 30 at 6:00 a.m.
“Establishes that electoral propaganda may only be carried out within sixty (60) days prior to the date of the respective vote, and that which is carried out using public space may be carried out within three (3) months prior to the date of the vote. date of the electoral contest”, says (verbatim) the decree of the National Government.
And it also states: “this Decree is intended to dictate rules for normal development during the presidential elections to be held in the first round on May 29, and if there is a second round, on June 19, 2022, in the national territory and in the Diplomatic Missions and Consular Offices of Colombia, accredited abroad during the periods between May 23 to 29, for the first and between June 13 to June 19 for the second, if any.
