New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz did not appreciate his Saturday night which ended in a 5-0 loss to the Rangers and was marked by the keeper’s impromptu injury Semyon Varlamov.
The latter was scheduled to face the Blueshirts on the ice at Madison Square Garden, but was hit by a throw from teammate Cal Clutterbuck during the warm-up session. The Russian received the puck under the mask, near the collarbone and above his left shoulder. As a result, the Islanders had to rely on Ilya Sorokin, who turned away 27 shots in his career debut in the National Hockey League.
Trotz was quite annoyed by this turn of events.
“Obviously, we had to send him into the fray under very difficult circumstances,” he told NHL.com of Sorokin. We ourselves injured “Varly” before the game. In my opinion, this is practically unacceptable. To me, it’s like hitting your quarterback in the pre-game. Players should know that their goalie is almost the most important guy in their roster. They have to make sure it’s ready. Some don’t think. ”
“The way to prepare for the warm-up was not right for Ilya, nor for ‘Varly’. It all started during the session and it continued throughout the game, ”he lamented.
Details surrounding Varlamov’s injury have not been clarified. He shut out the Rangers 4-0 on Thursday with 24 saves. Cory Schneider is the organization’s third goalie.
