Barriers to Implementing Breast Cancer Vaccination Campaign in Schools: EPI’s Warning and Call to Action

The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) has encountered barriers in schools to implement the breast cancer vaccination campaign. They warn that some parents are reluctant to allow their daughters to receive the appropriate dose.

The person in charge of the PAI in Tarija, Alicia Alemán, explained in an interview with Radio Tropical that they are currently making campaigns to provide the vaccine against inactivated poliovirus (IPV) and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

“Although parents in some educational institutions accept it well, there are always some people who are against giving their children the vaccine. We want to remind you that vaccines are essential, especially HPV, as we have a high rate of breast cancer“, he said.

Alemán asked to collaborate with the media to raise awareness among the population about the importance of vaccinations and suggested conducting surveys on parents to understand the reasons behind their refusal to vaccinate to give to their children.

“We do not know the reasons behind this opposition. We know there are anti-vaccination groups, but we don’t understand why they prevent girls from getting vaccinated, especially when it’s done in schools. This view is a source of concern, as parents should make this decision in an informed manner,” he said.

Alemán also pointed out that the lack of vaccination can lead to the appearance of serious diseases and is not limited to measles, It can also cause cases of flaccid paralysis, which can leave children with permanent disabilities.
