Barnim: Eberswalde rail vehicle plant opens up new business area

In addition to the maintenance of freight wagons, the Eberswalde (Barnim) rail vehicle plant now also converts car transporters and freight wagons. The company has therefore specialized in converting rail vehicle transporters to oversized dimensions for SUVs and electric cars.

“The need is growing because the electric vehicles that are produced today are significantly heavier and wider and in some cases cannot be transported on a standard freight wagon that can be double-decked,” said co-managing director Damian Pendzialek to rbb. When loading and unloading cars onto conventional car transport wagons, there is a lot of damage to the tires that could be avoided by converting them.

The rail vehicle plant has a turbulent history. After Deutsche Bahn closed its repair plant in 2016 and an investor went bankrupt in 2017, the Eberswalde rail vehicle plant is relying on tried and tested and new business strategies as its successor. The workforce has doubled since 2018 to 180 employees today.

The first 20 converted wagons have already been delivered to a French leasing company. In addition to follow-up orders for a further 400 car transporters, the company’s design and construction division could be further expanded in the future.
