barely inaugurated, a new cycle path attracts criticism in Lyon

The association “Ville à vélo” denounces the many bumps present on the new cycle path on rue Pierre Aubry. She also deplores a missing route in the direction of the descent.

“A real roller coaster ride”. Inaugurated this week in the 5th and 9th arrondissements of Lyon, the new cycle path on rue Pierre Aubry is already the subject of much criticism from cyclists.

Elected environmentalists wanted to redevelop this busy street to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. To do this, pedestrian crossings have been raised, a cycle path has been laid out and around a hundred trees have been planted.

many bumps

But after a year of work, the association “The city by bike” criticizes the ecologists for having poorly designed this redevelopment. In question, the many bumps present on the cycle paths.

“It’s a sloping street, and to catch up with the difference in height at the level of the cart entrances, each time, we have a big bump which is both painful for cyclists and for pedestrians”, regrets the co- president of the association “La ville à vélo” Frédérique Bienvenüe at the microphone of BFM Lyon.

The users who take this cycle path do not “expect” these many bumps, and are obliged to put “a big pedal stroke” to pass them, and this “all along the street, which is made like that “, she adds.

This problem is all the more important for members of the association with reduced mobility. “They have trouble getting around and they are forced either to use a three-wheeled tricycle or to be in a wheelchair,” explains Frédérique Bienvenüe. For some, it is even impossible to use this layout.

A missing track

Another problem: the layout of the cycle lane. This one was not finished in the direction of the descent and stops after “100 meters”, specifies Lyon Mag.

“We are waiting for the end of the route. I don’t know, there was perhaps no more paint”, quips Frédérique Bienvenüe.

The cycling association criticizes the environmental metropolis for not having listened to its alerts on the subject and asks it to rectify these shortcomings as soon as possible. “We are going to ask Greater Lyon again to intervene again, to see what they can do to make it more comfortable for pedestrians and cyclists,” said the co-president of the association.

She also wants the development to be done “as a priority for people on foot and by bike. If it’s less comfortable for residents and motorists, it’s not a big deal”.

A request and paradoxical criticism towards the Greens, who are so quick to meet the needs of cyclists in Lyon.
