(Seoul = News 1) Reporter Kim Il-chang = When wearing gloves in the middle of winter, your hands are always exposed unless you remove the back. When we greet people for the first time or meet acquaintances after a long time, we shake hands and experience hand-to-hand contact. Even if we are not lovers, we hold hands with others.

Feet are different. When I work, I wear socks and even shoes. I rarely take my socks off unless I’m at home. If you take off your socks and are barefoot, it is proof that a person is very comfortable. What if they were lovers? The moment bare feet touch each other, we replace this with love.

That’s why bare feet are important to writer Jinhan Lee. It is said that Lee Jin-han’s mother never took off her socks or overshoes in the house while living with her in-laws. It is an action that symbolically shows a mother’s courtesy to her in-laws. It is said that his interest in feet started with his mother.

And as interest grew, it expanded to the meaning of bare feet and ended with ‘love.’

Jinhan Lee’s works are deeply imbued with his own story.

The prejudice against strangers I felt during my long life in England, the agony as an Asian artist who could not even be included in Western art history, my self as a woman on the other side of that agony, my life as the second oldest of three sisters, and my different tendencies from my ‘yellow’ older sister and younger brother. The image of oneself with color, separation from a loved one, awkward love, all of this is incorporated throughout the work.

Jinhan Lee will hold his solo exhibition ‘Lucid Dreams’ at Gallery Hyundai in Jongno-gu, Seoul until December 22nd. This is artist Jinhan Lee’s first solo exhibition with Gallery Hyundai. The exhibition intensively displays 25 works from the time he moved to London in 2007 and began his full-fledged artistic career in 2008, through his 15 years of living in the UK, and since his return to the present.

The exhibition name is a metaphor for the overall world of Jinhan Lee’s work, which presents personal and intimate stories through scenes that seem to be a mixture of dreams and reality, and expresses universal resonance within humans.

Jinhan Lee, born in 1982, graduated from Hongik University, received a master’s degree from St. Martin’s and Goldsmiths in London, and completed his doctorate at UCL Slade School of Art in London in 2021.
