Mexico City., Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena will attend the high-level week of the 79th ordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place in New York from September 22 to 30.
Representing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Bárcena will meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the 27th of this month and the following day she will speak at the General Assembly’s General Debate, where she will call on the international community to promote peace, sustainable development and jointly address global challenges, according to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
The official will meet with her counterparts from other UN member states and with heads of various international organizations and United Nations agencies, with whom she will discuss priority issues for Mexico, including the peaceful resolution of disputes, migration and human mobility, Feminist Foreign Policy, disarmament and non-proliferation, climate change, the global drug problem, illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons, and food security.
On September 22, Secretary Bárcena will participate in the Future Summit, where a critical analysis of the functioning of the multilateral system will be carried out, concrete actions will be presented to address current and emerging challenges in the global context, and the Future Pact will be adopted, which promotes fair, inclusive and sustainable development.
On Monday, September 23, the Mexican foreign minister will speak at panels at the World Economic Forum, where strategies to deal with the geopolitical recession and climate change will be discussed.
On September 24, the head of the SRE will attend the Summit of the Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats, as well as the high-level event on democracy and combating extremism, which seeks to intensify the fight against inequality and disinformation to prevent the advance of intolerance on the international stage.
Secretary Bárcena will also meet with representatives from Indonesia, Korea, Turkey and Australia, countries that —along with Mexico— make up the MIKTA group, to promote greater cooperation and advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.
On Wednesday, September 25, the foreign minister’s activities include the annual High-Level Leaders’ Meeting for a Sustainable Ocean Economy; the Second Meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers; the event on comprehensive cooperation initiatives towards Haiti; as well as her participation in the UN Feminist Foreign Policy Group, where she will reaffirm Mexico’s commitment to substantive equality and discuss the progress and challenges in the implementation of feminist foreign policies.
The following day, on September 26, the Secretary will attend the Annual Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Middle-Income Countries; the Meeting between the extended troika of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union; and the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the High Ambition Coalition on the negotiation of the agreement to eliminate plastic pollution.
He will also present the Mexican Model of Human Mobility, which addresses migration with a regional vision that prioritizes structural causes so that it is a decision and not an obligation.
