Barcelona –
Jordi Alba will leave Barcelona at the end of this season. The two parties decided not to continue working together, even though the 34-year defender’s contract still had one more season left.
“Barcelona and Jordi Alba have agreed to terminate the player’s contract a year earlier than it should have ended at the end of the 2023-24 season,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
“Barcelona thanks Alba for her professionalism, commitment and dedication, as well as for the always positive and friendly relationship with all members of the Barça family, and wishes her every success for the future. Barça will always be home to you, Jordi,” the club said in a statement.
Alba is a product of the Barcelona academy, but got the opportunity to debut in LaLiga while defending Valencia in 2009. The Blaugrana brought him back in 2012 and lasted for 11 years.
While at Camp Nou, he won quite a number of trophies, including six LaLiga titles, five Copa del Reys and one Champions League. The home match against Mallorca in the 37th jornada, Monday (29/5) at 00.00 WIB will be a farewell game for him.
Besides Alba, Sergio Busquets will also leave Barcelona at the end of this season because his contract is up. That is, the Catalan giants will lose two captains at once.
There is no definite explanation behind Alba’s departure ahead of schedule, but this move is allegedly aimed at clearing the salary allocation to be given to other players. It is known that the new contracts of Gavi and Ronald Araujo cannot be registered with LaLiga.
Apart from that, Barcelona also still wants to target a number of names next season, but is constrained by a limited salary budget. The departure of a number of players is necessary, especially those who are well paid or have been replaced.
Alba is no longer Xavi Hernandez’s first choice at the back. He has only started 13 times in the Spanish League this season.
