Barcelona: Tourists are left out in the cold – No more outdoor stoves –

Outdoor stoves have been banned in Barcelona by 2025, meaning December visitors were the last to enjoy going out and drinking in the historic center in warm temperatures.

In an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emission, the ban was decided to come into effect from January 1. “It was the culmination of a multi-year battle between the city council and restaurateurs who fear the loss of customers” commented the international media.

The measure was first introduced in 2018, but the city council agreed to phase it out to give the catering sector time to adjust.

Excluded from the ban are electric stoves with a power that will not exceed 150W/m2. “They will still be allowed between November 1 and April 30,” the city council said in a statement on December 17.

In Madrid there was also an attempt to ban outdoor heaters but the measure was ultimately not implemented after a local court ruled that the city council failed to prove they contributed to global warming.
