Madrid. Robert Lewandowski celebrated a double in a couple of minutes, during an offensive explosion of four goals in the second half, to beat Real Madrid 4-0, in the first Clásico of the Spanish League, with which they consolidated themselves in the leadership of the course.
The victory boosts the culés with 30 points, six above the sub-leaders merengues, who saw a streak of 42 days without defeat in the League broken since last year.
With this victory, Barca broke a streak of four defeats in a row in official matches against the meringues.
“We are on a very good path, let’s hope to continue this good,” said culé defender Íñigo Martínez. “With the ball we have always been a superior team to Madrid, what Madrid is good at is the counterattack.”
Lewandowski put numbers on the scoreboard in the 54th minute, after resolving a filtered pass from Marc Casado with a low shot. At 56 he sent a header into the net to give him a clear route to victory.
Lamine Yamal made his debut as a scorer in a Clásico with a shot above in the 77th minute. He became the youngest scorer in these matches at 17 years and 106 days.
Raphinha also scored his first goal against Madrid – to reach six on the course – after beating Lucas Vázquez and finishing with a lofted shot before goalkeeper Andriy Lunin came out in the 84th minute.
The Polish Lewandowski consolidated his leadership among scorers in Spain by reaching 14 goals (17 this season). He had the option of scoring his second hat trick of the season in the 65th, but his shot with an open frame inside the area hit the base of the post.
The disappointing Merengue defeat in front of their fans was their first in the league since September 24, 2024, when they lost 3-1 to Atlético de Madrid in the first round of last year. With this setback they let go of the opportunity to equal the mark of 43 days without defeat that Barca recorded between 2017 and 2018.
In the first half the meringues were victims of the good coordination of the rival defense that left them offside eight times; six of those advanced positions were from French star Kylian Mbappé.
Mbappé’s sixth offside was signaled by video arbitration (VAR) to annul a goal when they were running in the 31st minute. Madrid were offside 12 times in the entire match by just one of the culés.
For Barcelona, Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong returned to the field, who had not played since the last Clásico on April 21 when he left with a severe ankle injury.
In another result, Rayo Vallecano beat Alavés 1-0 with an own goal from Antonio Sivera.
Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez did not have minutes as he remained on the substitute bench.
In more games, Villarreal won a 2-1 away victory against Valladolid and Las Palmas beat Girona 1-0.
The Barça team is on a streak of five consecutive victories in all competitions, including the 4-1 home win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League in the middle of the week.
