Barcelona taxi drivers warn: The mobilizations are going to be tough

While the state of alarm has lasted, taxis in the metropolitan area of Barcelona have been regulated with a reduction in the fleet on the streets.

Since the “new normal” was entered last week, the fleet has been expanded to 60%, which means that there are 6,000 taxis on the streets of Barcelona every day.

The situation is unsustainable, according to the Taxi Project spokesperson, Tito Álvarez:

“During the state of alarm we have had a regulation where the same decree gave a legal umbrella to the AMB to regulate ourselves, but at the end of the state of alarm there is no regulation. There is a lot of offer and there are no customers.

Also in Madrid today there have been mobilizations to demand protection from the sector.

Barcelona taxi drivers say that if there is no solution to the situation that is being experienced, there will be mobilizations and they will be harsh.

According to the Metropolitan Taxi Institute, as of next Monday, the fleet will be further expanded, with 7,000 taxis circulating empty in Barcelona.

And the problem worsens, if we add to the lack of tourists the lack of regulation of Cabify vehicles, which systematically violate the law.

On this issue, Tito Álvarez adds:

“The problem comes for two reasons: lack of control and non-compliance with the commitments they had with us in January. We have the Cabify VTCs stopped in all corners of the city and nobody sanctions them. “In addition, Cabify continues to operate through the reservations of its application, systematically not complying with the regulations.”

They add that for them the matter is, to a large extent, in the hands of the Generalitat, having the powers transferred:

«The highest authority, which is the Generalitat, cannot have 8,000 taxis circling the street, with the risk it entails. If it is not remedied before Monday, we are running out of room for dialogue.
