The drama took place on Wednesday evening in a parking lot in Mataró, a Catalan town on the east coast of Spain. There, Mounir Nasraoui (35), the father of Lamine Yamal, was stabbed. This is said to have happened during an argument. According to several Spanish media, Nasraoui spent the night in hospital, but his life is out of danger.

Not much is known about the cause of the stabbing. A number of Spanish newspapers do write that it was a (neighborhood) quarrel that got out of hand. A kind of settling of scores after an earlier conflict. Nasraoui would therefore already have had a quarrel with the perpetrators at the time he was stabbed.

Suspects arrested

Three suspects have been arrested, a fourth suspect is still being sought. Reportedly, several people witnessed the stabbing. The police have therefore started a witness investigation.

Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal, the son of victim Mounir Nasraoui, grew into an international superstar during the last European Championship. He already shone regularly at his club FC Barcelona, but also lived up to expectations in Germany in the service of the Spanish national team.

Yamal even became the youngest goalscorer ever at a final tournament. At the moment the striker curled the ball into the top corner with his left foot in the semi-final against France, he was only 16 years and 362 days old. A few days later, Yamal celebrated his 17th birthday. Before the Spanish footballer broke the record, Brazilian legend Pelé held the record for youngest goalscorer at a European Championship or World Cup.

During the tournament in Germany, Yamal’s relatively young father was also regularly in the spotlight. Nasraoui was in the stands for every match and saw his son become European champion. “Thank you for making me the happiest father in the world,” he wrote on Instagram about Lamine Yamal’s world-class performance.
