The Spanish judiciary announced that the current president of Spanish Football League champion Barcelona, Joan Laporta, has also been charged in the arbitration scandal involving the Catalan club.
The Spanish judiciary has previously brought charges in this scandal against FC Barcelona and its former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, such as Jose Maria Enriques Negrera, the former arbitration official, and his son.
The judge in charge of the investigation explained that Laporta, who has not been charged so far, became a defendant in the case, as he was president of the club during his first term, which lasted from 2003 to 2010.
He added in his statement that, in his opinion, he cannot benefit from the statute of limitations, given the seriousness of the accusations.
The case concerns alleged payments amounting to more than 7.3 million euros, made by Barcelona to Negrera, the former vice president of the technical arbitration committee, between 2001 and 2018, to provide the club with verbal advice and advice on topics related to referees.
The payments were made by the company “Dasnel 95”, affiliated with the former referee, and ended with the latter losing his No. 2 position in Spanish arbitration.
This scandal, which was called the “Negrira Affair,” has poisoned the life of Barcelona for months, which denies any wrongdoing.
The investigation took on a new dimension at the end of September with the inspection of the headquarters of the Technical Committee of Referees, the Spanish Arbitration Department.
