Barcelona fell to Monaco at the end of the first day of the Champions League on Thursday under a new format that aims to add greater competitiveness to Europe’s most important tournament.
One of the most eagerly awaited matches on Thursday was Barcelona’s arrival at Monaco’s home in search of their first win in the tournament, but it was the French side that won 2-1 against the Catalans led by Hansi Flick, who made his debut as Barcelona’s coach in the tournament.
The Spanish side started the match behind, with Maghnes Akliouche scoring the first goal for the home side after a quarter of an hour. Then Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal pulled one back in the 28th minute to leave the score at 1-1 going into half-time.
Then, in the second half, George Ilenikheana scored the second (71′) to give the victory to the French.
