According to the management of the highest Spanish football competition, salaries in the Catalan big club FC Barcelona fell by almost 300 million euros year-on-year to the current 97 million euros.

Less than a year ago, the salaries of players in this team were at the level of 385 million euros. The reason for the drastic reduction in salaries is the unfavorable economic situation in this organization. It is interesting to note that in the rival Real Madrid, they currently spend seven times more on salaries than in FC Barcelona.

Although the Catalans have skewed players’ salary spending in recent months, they have failed to retain star Argentine Lionel Messi, who headed to the French team Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi received a salary of around € 140 million in one season, agreeing to be half the amount just to stay in Barcelona. However, even that was not enough for the club to meet the conditions of La Liga. In it, each club can spend different amounts on salaries depending on the economic situation. Simply put, this is about 70 percent of revenue.

Two years ago, at FC Barcelona, all the players received a total of approximately 670 million euros, which was the highest amount in the entire competition. However, the decline came first to 385 million and now to 97 million euros. And in addition to Messi, the club also lost striker Antoine Griezmann, who returned to Atlética Madrid, tentatively for a guest appearance.

Currently, six other La Liga clubs spend more than FC Barcelona on salaries. Real Madrid (€ 739 million) is ahead of FC Sevilla (€ 200 million) and Atletico Madrid (€ 171 million). FC Valencia pays the least with 30 million. In total, all La Liga participants spend up to 2.27 billion euros on players’ salaries for the 2021/2022 season, a two percent decrease compared to the previous year.

La Liga clubs are currently benefiting from an agreement between the competition management and the CVC investment fund. According to La Liga’s management, its participants spent only 271 million euros before the current year to buy new reinforcements. which is the lowest amount among the elite leagues in Europe. Teams from England, Germany, France and Italy missed more at the transfers.
