On September 28, a court in Spain accused Barcelona of bribery in connection with the receipt of payments by the former deputy chairman of the technical committee of referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, José Negreira. On March 15, it became known that the Barcelona court accepted for consideration the complaint submitted by the prosecutor’s office against two former presidents of Barcelona and the club itself.

“If found guilty, the criminals will receive between three and six years in prison. “Barcelona itself could be suspended from operating as a professional football club, which would likely lead to bankruptcy of the 124-year-old club,” The Telegraph said.

According to media reports, between 2001 and 2018, the former vice-president of the Spanish refereeing committee, Negreira, received approximately €7 million for alleged consultations for Barcelona related to the work of referees. As El Pais previously reported, Negreira’s company handed over envelopes to Barcelona’s offices every time the club played a league or Copa del Rey match. They included a written report and a video analyzing the profile of the referee who was to officiate the next match.

Between 2001 and 2018, Barcelona were La Liga champions nine times and finished with silver medals five more times.
