In the summer of 2022, the Spanish football club FC Barcelona could hire the Norwegian striker Erling Haaland from the German Borussia Dortmund, despite the fact that he still has high debts.
This is what Spanish football expert Guillem Balague thought, who said this in an interview with BBC Radio 5. “Barcelona needs to get rid of the high salaries of the players, but if they are convinced at the club that they can do it, they can get Erling,” Balague said. The severance pay for 21-year-old Nora is currently at the level of 75 million euros.
Recently, the Catalans acquired a young striker, Ferran Torres, from Manchester City for about 55 million euros, but the club has not yet been able to register its contract due to strict rules in Spanish football. According to FC Barcelona President Joan Laport, his club is “back among the big players” in the transfer market.

“Laporta sells a promising future,” Balague noted, adding that the Catalan club was close to agreeing a € 1.5 billion loan from the US investment bank Goldman Sachs. These funds should be used for the planned reconstruction of the Camp Nou stadium and its surroundings. Earlier, FC Barcelona obtained a loan of 595 million euros from the same bank. Part of these amounts should be used to cover the debts (a total of 1.3 billion euros), which, according to Laport, the club has.
“How can they get Haaland? For example, by selling players like Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti, Sergino Dest, Clément Lenglet, Frenkie de Jong, Martin Braithwaite, Oscar Minguez or Luuk de Jong. It’s complicated, but not impossible.” Balague thinks.
He also indicated that FC Barcelona’s management could reconsider its initial refusal to join La Liga’s agreement with CVC. This would increase the club’s budget and allow more players to be hired.

Its possible future is associated with most elite teams across the continent. According to Balague, Haaland will prefer the Spanish La Liga.
“He would probably get more money in the Premier League, but I think he will choose La Liga. Real Madrid or FC Barcelona are still a big attraction.” added a Spanish expert. He also recalled the good relationship between Agent Haaland and the President of FC Barcelona. “Mino Raiola and Laporta are close. If the club has money, Barcelona could repay Raiola by buying a few younger players from its portfolio,” added.
However, he admitted that Agent Raiola, after meeting Laport, did not stop negotiating with other people interested in Haaland’s services. There is interest from Juventus Turin in Italy, Paris Saint-Germain in France and in English Premier League clubs.
