Barcelona (AP) – FC Barcelona has fought its way into the final of the Spanish soccer cup competition Copa del Rey.
The team around the German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and Argentina’s superstar Lionel Messi won at home 3-0 (2-0, 1-0) after extra time against Sevilla FC. The Catalans made up for the 2-0 win in the first leg in Andalusia.
After the early lead by former Bundesliga professional Ousmane Dembelé in the twelfth minute, the equalizer threatened in the 73rd minute. Ter Stegen saved the penalty from Seville’s Lucas Ocampos.
It took until shortly before the end to get the important second goal. Only in the fourth minute of stoppage time was veteran Gerard Piqué on the spot. Shortly before, guest player Fernando had to leave the field after a yellow-red card. Barcelona took advantage of the majority early on at the start of extra time, when Martin Braithwaite, who was substituted in the 89th minute, made the decision 3-0.
The second finalists will be determined this Thursday by UD Levante and Athletic Bilbao, who split 1-1 in the first leg.
