The collision of two trains at the Montcada i Reixac-Manresa station (Barcelona) resulted in “several passengers” being injured this Wednesday, Renfe said in a statement. A train of passengers bound for Barcelona collided with another from behind at around 7.50am this Wednesday as it passed through Barcelona station, for reasons which are still being investigated. About 70 people were injured, as reported by the Civil Protection. The affected trains were evacuated in less than half an hour and no people were trapped in the cars.
The affected trains covered the Renfe commuter line R4, whose circulation is currently paralysed, as well as lines R7 and R12, in both directions. Renfe has activated the protocol established for this type of incident with the collaboration of the Civil Protection and the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), which has transferred 18 units to the site.
The Civil Protection has activated the emergency railway plan of Catalonia (Ferrocat) in the alert phase and Renfe explained that the causes of the accident are being investigated.
“We were waiting for the train and heard a crash, the stationary train moved two meters and stopped. Many people fell from the impact because the train was very full,” Pol Viñas explained to Ser Catalunya. The company has activated the protocol established for this type of accident with the collaboration of the Civil Protection and the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM).
