Barca has found a replacement for ter Stegen

Wojciech Szczesny has ended his career after leaving Juventus Turin. After just a few weeks, the Pole is now coming out of retirement to join FC Barcelona. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Szczesny’s move to the Catalans is imminent.

According to reports, Szczesny is due to undergo his medical check in the coming days. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Pole will sign a one-year contract. The 34-year-old’s contract with the Spanish league leaders is presumably valid until the end of the season. It is likely that Szczesny will then leave the club and retire.

The Pole had Sport has already confirmed that he is negotiating with Barca: “Yes, I am now in talks and am considering a move to Barça. It would be disrespectful if I did not consider this option for my career. Barça is one of the best clubs in the world.”

At Barca, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will return to goal next season at the latest, provided the German national goalkeeper’s recovery process goes somewhat normally. Ter Stegen tore his patellar tendon in the league match against Villarreal and will be out for the rest of the season.

It is not too surprising that Barca has now signed a replacement in Szczesny. Reserve goalkeeper Inaki Pena is said to be highly regarded by head coach Hansi Flick, but he has not yet been able to prove himself at the highest level over a longer period of time. Since Barca seem to be ready for the title this season (they have won all six games in La Liga), the signing of an experienced world-class goalkeeper – especially on a free transfer – is logical.
