Barbra Streisand Takes Action: Siri Pronunciation and the “Streisand Effect”

The American singer was visibly annoyed by Apple’s voice assistant and therefore decided to take action in high places.

“It’s a privilege of fame.” On the BBC, American singer Barbra Streisand says she telephoned Tim Cook directly for a major modification to Siri: the pronunciation of her last name.

“My name doesn’t have a ‘z’,” she says. “It’s Streisand, like sand on the beach. How do I fix this? I figured I’d better call Apple boss Tim Cook.”

And obviously, the latter got the message across. In the BBC video, the journalist also tested Siri by asking her to pronounce the singer’s name. And the assistant changed his pronunciation.

Barbra Streisand released her memoirs this month in the United States, where she looked back on her career.

More anecdotally, she also returned to the famous “Streisand effect” when she demanded a huge sum from a man who had published an aerial photo of his house. Confidential, the photo was then seen massively because of this indirect publicity.

“When I first heard the term, I naively thought: is this about the effect of my music? I didn’t know.” She simply says she wanted to remove her name from the photo for security reasons, relate Vanity Fair.
