Barbora Krejčíková’s Wimbledon Journey: Fitness Focus, Grass Season, and Memories of Jana Novotná

“He is not here,” answered Krejčíková when asked about the absence of Kartus in the lodge. “I have the rest of the team here. Fitness and physio. We have taken it this way now. I guess I don’t want to talk about it yet. Maybe after the tournament,” she added.

The former world number two and two-time winner of last year’s Roland Garros is focusing mainly on fitness for the third Grand Slam tournament of the season. “We did more fitness preparation, because it is the main key for me now. I was not ready for the clay, and if I am not ready, it doesn’t fit together,” she said.

She managed the match against Watson, the 144th player in the world, thanks to her 100% service and three breaks. She advanced to the 2nd round of Wimbledon for the third time in a row. On court number 1, the support of the British fans also stood. “I noticed that they were cheering for Heather a lot. But I was expecting that and I was ready for it. I also heard a few people cheering in Czech. Towards the end of the second set, people were cheering more and I felt that my opponent was getting better with them. That’s why I was I’m glad I finished it and couldn’t go on,” Krejčíková pointed out.

During the match, the native of Brno requested a break to treat her leg. “I don’t know what happened. At some point, when I was chasing a ball that was out and I stopped, I got a stab in my leg and it hurt for the next three balls. I called a physio to tape it up. After that it was better and it only stung me once,” Krejčíková described.

After the unsuccessful Roland Garros, where she finished in the 1st round, she is currently praising the grass part of the season. Before Wimbledon, she also reached the final of the tournament in Birmingham. “On grass, I was looking forward to a new start. In Birmingham, I felt that I was improving match by match. I think that every season I play better on grass and I enjoy it more. The tennis there is interesting and I’m figuring it out , how to use your game. We’ll see round by round,” said the twenty-seven-year-old tennis player.

She won the opening match of Wimbledon the day after the 25th anniversary of the triumph of former coach Jana Novotná. “When I go to the dressing room, I see her photo in such a golden frame. I look at it every day,” she said. “But when she won Wimbledon, I wasn’t even three years old. I was tiny and didn’t know that I was going to play tennis yet, so I didn’t notice it. I would probably watch these dates differently if Jana was still here with us,” Krejčíková recalled.

During the tournament, he lives with a local family five minutes from the site. “I’ve been with them since 2015, so for a long time. I like it there, the family is nice and there’s also a dog. That’s always a plus and key for me. I have great conditions there and it’s a nice revival for me,” she added Krejčíková, who is waiting for the 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andrejevová in the 2nd round.
