This year, the legendary Barbie doll’s companion – Ken, is celebrating his sixty years, TV3 news program “900 seconds” reports.
Ken showed the dolls on store shelves in 1961 – as a companion to Barbie, whose sales began two years earlier. Since then, dolls have evolved over time and, for example, Ken has had three different body shapes, nine skin tones, 10 eye colors and 27 hairstyles.
To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of this doll, Matell has big plans. Firstly, a new version of Ken has already been released – in a wheelchair, and secondly, a slightly restored original Ken – as he looked in 61 – in a swimsuit is available again.
Barbie’s first outfit was also a swimsuit with a plan for consumers to buy other clothes and accessories for the dolls.
Matell is also currently working with a number of fashion designers to create a Ken image of a fluer to show off Barbie’s account on Instagram.
