“Barbie” broke records on the first cinema weekend. There is no end in sight to the hype: no film was seen by more moviegoers in North America this year than Greta Gerwig’s colorful doll adaptation.

In July 2023, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was released in cinemas and broke two records on the first weekend: the film not only became the most successful cinema debut of the year, but also the most successful film by a female director. In North America, “Barbie” has now overtaken the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” and thus got the title as the highest-grossing movie of the year. Since its official launch, the comedy starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has grossed $575.4 million at the box office, compared to $574 million for Super Mario.
“Barbie” has now grossed $1.3 billion worldwide. Again, the comedy could outperform the computer-animated adventure film in the next few days. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic’s production grossed $1.35 billion. The two films are the only ones to break the billion mark this year.

Will Barbie overtake Harry Potter?
In addition, the comedy was the fastest release of a film by Warner Bros. studios to break the billion mark after 17 days in cinemas. There is speculation that Barbie could even surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2012) to become the studio’s highest-grossing global release of all time.
