“Barbie” Surpasses One Billion Dollars, Outshining Oppenheimer

Around two weeks after its release, the highly acclaimed film “Barbie” has already broken the one billion dollar mark. The film about the physicist Oppenheimer, which was released at the same time, only grossed half as much.

The film “Barbie” has already grossed more than one billion dollars at the box office worldwide since its premiere around two weeks ago. Tickets for the strip were sold for $459 million in US theaters and $572 million overseas, a subsidiary of media group Warner Bros. Discovery said yesterday. This brings “Barbie” to a total of 1.0315 billion dollars so far.

As sales directors, they’re not often speechless about a film’s results, “but Barbillion has shattered even our most optimistic predictions,” said Warner executives Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps.

Already one of the most successful films

Directed by Oscar-nominated writer-director Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, the film sends Mattel’s doll on an adventure into the real world.

In terms of sales, it is already the most successful film by a female director at the box office. According to Comscore media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, there have only been about 50 films in history that have reached the $1 billion mark after adjusting for inflation. “I’ve been in this game for 30 years and the Barbie and Barbenheimer phenomenon is as unprecedented as it is unpredictable,” he said.

“Oppenheimer” is behind Barbie

The hype about “Barbie” was also sparked by the fact that it was marketed in contrast to and in competition with the film “Oppenheimer” by director Christopher Nolan, which was released at the same time, and was often referred to as “Barbenheimer”. Although Nolan broke his own records with his three-hour film about the physicist who led the Manhattan project to build the first atomic bomb, the film did not come close to the sales figures of “Barbie”.

According to Universal estimates, the film has grossed around half a billion dollars worldwide since its release. According to Universal, “Oppenheimer” is the highest-grossing film set during World War II at $552.9 million. The age rating of “Oppenheimer” could also play a role in the income: Compared to Barbie, the film has a so-called “R rating” in the USA – i.e. it is only released from the age of 17.

The commercial success of “Barbie” gives the toy manufacturer Mattel momentum for further films. A Polly Pocket film starring Lilly Collins and directed by Lena Dunham is in the pipeline. Ticket sales for Barbie this year ranked second only to The Super Mario Bros, which opened in April and grossed $1.357 billion at the box office.
